PALM SPRINGS: BLAST FROM THE PAST
The Blast From the Past show sizzled in the summer time desert heat. The florescent colors vibrated off the large canvases, impressive with their saturated brightness.
Simple shapes; optical illusions; and the bright, colorful legacy of modernism look as fresh as ever in an exhibition of paintings, drawings, and prints at the Palm Springs Art Museum. According to the museum, "The works in Blast From the Past: 60s and 70s Geometric Abstractions span several movements, including Minimalism, Op Art, and Hard Edge, as well as geographical boundaries beyond the United States. The works have definite structure, built with color and reflecting precision in organization and execution. The artists were interested in space and order."
The powerful abstractions feel right at home in Palm Springs, their intensity rivaling the incessant solar rays outside. It might be safer to keep the shades on inside the museum.
